ATHENS AREA HISTORICAL SOCIETY
TOMBSTONE TOUR 2011
The third Tombstone Tour was conducted October 1, 2011. A variety of former citizens were honored which included several interesting personalities and their rich histories. Following are those honored and the names and pictures of the area citizens who played their parts.
Terry & Kevin Henckel as William & Alice Swartz- The purchased what is now the Dave & Helen house in 1883. They became pioneers of the west as they trek to Kansas to homestead but returned to Athens due to severe drought.
Lori Swanson as Edith Hartman Zinn- Edith & her husband (Hartman) built Nottawa Fruit Farm into one of the largest & most profitable in Michigan.
Eric McClure as Job Boyce. He was the last Athens area surviving veteran from the Civil War. He was member of the unit that guarded the casket of President Lincoln after he was assassinated.
Ralph Moore as Warren Nichols- who was one of the first group of white settlers to live in Athens area, which was known as Dry Prairie.
Jim Ballinger as Frank Wolfe- who's brother owned "Wolfe's Feed and Grain" in Athens. He was known for growing and cultivating dahlias of which he developed 25 varieties.
